BOLDFACE NAMES / Joyce Wadler
We So Love a Ballad
On Tuesday, we promised YOUR NAME HERE to the person who could name the
song that LILLETTE JENKINS performed at Chez Josephine on New Year's Eve
about the love of a one-eyed man for a one-legged woman.
As always, the response to this beloved Boldface Names contest has been
tremendous. And now that both entries have been counted, we are declaring
STEVEN REA, movie critic of The Philadelphia Inquirer, the winner.
He identified the song as "One-Eyed Man" and included as some of his sample
lyrics: When I had that one-eyed man / I didn't know what I had / I used
to be so mean and evil / I treated that man so bad.
Ms. Jenkins, when we called her at home in Florida, said that Mr. Rea
was correct. Then the singer, who is 80 and long ago performed at the
Apollo, razzle-dazzled us by sitting down at the piano and singing the whole
song. And if you go to nytimes.com/nyregion, you'll get to hear her, too.
